When Sophia started preschool in 2010 it was a major milestone for our family! Landon had just joined the family and we thought it would be a good idea to get Sophia out of the house for just a few hours a couple of days each week. We enrolled her at the York Jewish Community Center (York JCC) in their 2’s and 3’s class at the ripe age of 21 months. At the end of the school year we learned that they would be having Picture Day and I was so excited for Sophia’s first school photo! I’m not sure why… it wasn’t like we didn’t have any good photos of her!! I guess there is something sentimental about the formality of a school photo :) I was a little sad when I realized that one of the teachers would just take the class photo and parents could buy a 4×6 of the picture – which was, by the way, a big fundraiser for the school.
After the first year I approached the school director and volunteered our services to take class pictures for the preschool and childcare groups at the school. While this was certainly not our specialty, we were confident that we would be able to help out the school by doing this for them. If we were only going to get one class picture to commemorate her school year I wanted it to at least be a good one! Class photos turned out so good that year that with a little persuasion they finally agreed to let us take individual photos of all of the students the following year. The truth is that most families don’t have portrait sessions every year, and many times school photos are the only professional pictures that are taken of their children. The demand was there from the families and we were excited that by offering individual photos we were able to triple this fundraiser for the school! It was a Win-Win for everyone! The area to shoot in (the playground) was always congested, mid-day and in the hot hot sun! But everyone had fun and the kids all looked adorable :)
Last week Richard took the school photos for Landon’s last year at the York JCC and I can’t believe our time at the school is almost over! We’ve spent the last 5 years here and it has honestly become our family’s second home. We’ve loved our time at the York JCC and could not be happier with the program and the incredible teachers there. As we wrap up our final weeks at school, we wanted to share a quick look back at the kids official school photos :)
One perk of being the photographer – bonus picture of both kids together :)
The York JCC is currently under construction as they expand to be able to serve even more families. As a result, we made the decision to move all photos inside this year.
Unofficial photos as we tested out the new backdrop in the basement. Even though Sophia is now in Kindergarten, she couldn’t resist the opportunity to pose :)
